US KIDS WOULD FO DOWN TO THE SEAL WALL AND SLIDE DOWN IT WHEN THE TIDE WAS OUT. WE RODE THE SCHOOL BUS TO KADENA TO ATTEND KADENA ELEMENTARY. THEN WE MOVED TO ANOTHER HOUSE IN KITIMAE, BUT THE "STEALIE BOYS" CAME AND ROBBED THE NEIGHBOURHOOD RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS OF 1962 AND DAD PUT IN FOR VASE HOUSING. WE GOT TO LIVE IN THE BRAND NEW SEBELLE HOUSING AND GOT TO WALK TO KADENA ELEMENTARY. BUT I AGED OUT AD HAD TO ATTEND A JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN AN OLD ARMY BASE WITH ARMED GUARDS AND RAZOR WORED FENCES. IN QUONSET HUTS WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING AND MAN OH MAN WAS IT HOT. HERE THE DEAL THOU I FORGOT THE NAME OF THAT OLD ARMY BASE THE dod USED FOR A SCHOOL UNTIL NEW SCHOOL WAS BUILT BACK THEN. I lived there as an "Army Brat" from mid 1954 until mid 1958. I lived at 1802?? Sukiran. My father was Dr. (Col). J. Sidney Rice, a dermatologist at Mercy Hospital. I attended 6th through 9th grade on Okinawa. I had a great time there.

I lived on the Rock in the '60s. Attended Sukiran and Kadena elementary schools. Fond memories of rock candy, John Chapman - teacher, but most of all the absolute freedom to roam the island.

I knew Ellie, Betty Havira, Betty Lanuza! They were a couple years older than me but they let me hang with them! Lived in Oyama beneath MCAS Futemna. I think we were there 1960 to 1964.

Hi David I came here a second time, and I'm glad I did - I took the time to look at many of your photos - and you have, without doubt, the best collection of photos from Korea. It's a pity that although I go to Korea nearly every year (my parents are there), I only get to see it in mid-winter, where colours are very difficult to find. I don't know how often you check your guestbook, but I would like to say that I really love the pictures in your photo album; particularly that of Korea. The colors are so vibrant and you have a great eye as well as a wonderful imagination and talent. Though I have been there once, I only stayed in Seoul, but looking at your pictures makes me want to go back and explore the countryside more.

David, I can't find another way to contact you... I found your photos on a Google search for archives of Korean photos. I develop exhibits for the Austin Children's Museum and we are currently working on an exhiibt about Korean culture for kids that will open here in January and then traveling nationally to 10 children's museums. We are looking for photos to use in the exhibit and think some of yours might work well. How can we go about getting permission to use the photos? I visited Pusan [ Busan 8-} ] for the first time this year in April 2001. It is a very nice city (and big!).
