On April 3rd 68 Bravo company of 2nd/2nd Mech Inf. out of Lai Khe was on a RIF searching for an enemy base camp to the NE of Lai Khe. the column moved into a horseshoe ambush on a very wide jungle trail. In the end after we withdrew we had 4 KIA and 31 WIA. Due to a weak old iron bridge the tanks form 2nd/34th Armor could not stay with us so we were only Mech Inf. with other Inf. attached. I am looking for others who were also there that day who I can speak with about what happened.

Dave,
I work with a group of Vietnamese in efforts find graves from the war years. Currently there are search efforts going at Loc Ninh. On 6-Apr-2021, the team discovered some dog-tags. I located the owner and am having them returned.
I wish to communicate with veterans such as yourself or Jeff Harvey (c-n-p below) that may have recollections of a mass grave at Loc Ninh.

I was with the 1-28th. We were about 4 Ks east of Loc Ninh strip. When they lifted us out 9 or 10 Nov, they dropped us on the strip. What I remember about it was the large ditch that had been dug along the east side of the strip that was being used as a mass grave for many VC KIA. There had to be 100s of bodies in the hole.

Hi all,
My Dad, Gene Gilbert served 66-67 C. Co. 2/34 Armor. He died many years ago but this week I came across a box of slides and unknown to me they are from Vietnam. There are others in the photos and I would love to share, just not sure where. Suggestions?

"TO THOSE WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR IT, LIFE HAS A FLAVOR THAT THE PROTECTED WILL NEVER KNOW!"

I came upon your site while surfing the net and knew that the above statement would have special meaning for you. Vietnam has left us all with many memories of those with whom we served and those who didn’t make it back. I served with 3/22nd, 25th Infantry Division out of Tay Ninh as an infantryman. Fought the NVA on the slopes of Nui Ba Den twice with numerous firefights in and around the area bordering the Cambodian border. Remember your Christmas in Vietnam? Mine was spent on an ambush patrol near the Cambodian border. Awarded Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars with “V”. After 5 months in the field, I was pulled to the 93rd Evac at Long Binh to work with soldiers suffering from combat fatigue. Coming home was one of the most difficult parts of our tours. Over the last 10 years, I chronicled my tour of duty and the response has been overwhelming. There are presently over One Hundred 5 Star Reviews worldwide. It’s free to Amazon Prime members. Courage on the Mountain

Thousands of Vietnam Veterans have proudly endorsed these memoirs. Please check out the website at courageonthemountain.com with the accompanying introduction. It will make you proud for your service and all the men and women who served our country during the Vietnam war.

I proud that you made it home brother! Thank you for your service and May God Bless!

San Diego greetings Dave. Followed a link and found and very much enjoyed your "Random" photos...my kind of photography. Like you, I was with The Big Red One and served in VN from the Spring of 1969 t0 the Spring of 1970. I was a radio operator with the 2nd of the 16th Inf. My wife and I visited VN in 2013 with Gate 1 Tours and had a wonderful time (all though I was a little apprehensive at first ).
Anyway, welcome home brother, Jim Lemen

Enjoyed your galleries, I was robin hood 27 a pilot in the robin hoods 173rd AHC
jan 67/feb 68. Our only reason for being was for the "Grunts" and when you called we came. Sometimes when you called I swear you'd wait till you were ass deep in alligators and then give us a jingle to see if we'd stop by to pick up some wounded an could you bring a little food, water, and ammo. I remember when we'd get a call in the middle of the night, I always hoped you'd still be in a fire fight, Two reasons, one I could find you in all that dark country and the second reason I could tell who were the good guys and who were the bad guys by the color of the tracers. One thing about Grunts they were not dumb, they were not about to stand in the middle of the LZ waving a flashlight:)

Hello again! I am still looking for anyone that may have served or remember serving with my Dad - Terry Lee Kalber from Effingham, Illinois. He served with the 1st Infantry Division from 67-68. I know he was an RTO - very, very little guy. From some of the pictures I have I am led to believe that he was stationed for a period at Lai Khe but I am not sure at all. He was awarded the Bronze Star but always made it sound like it wasn't a big deal and that everyone received one. Of course I always wanted to know how or what he did to get it but he would never elaborate. I have quite a few pictures that I would be will to share with anyone as well as some other tid bits of information I have been able to find.

I would love to connect with anyone that may have remembered Dad or anyone that could shed some light on Bronze Star recipients etc.....

My Dad passed away in 2008 from complication arising from Renial Carcinoma (Kidney Cancer) ..... maybe a result of exposure to Agent Orange?

My email address is CKA1BER@GMAIL.COM OR KALBERFAMILYGENEALOGY@GMAIL.COM

I look forward to connecting and sharing! Take care and God Bless! May everyone out there have a wonderful Easter Weekend!

Hi Dave,
Welcome Home. I was with The First Infantry Division 1/2 Black Scarf Battalion. In July of 1967 we traveled via The USNS Geiger to Viet Nam. We made up three new Companies of The Big Red One 1/2, 1/26, 1/28th. I'm' writing my memoirs on my tour of Viet Nam as a Combat Infantryman. I would like to have your permission to use one of your photos of the Rome Plow during Operation Paul Bunyan when they cleared the rubber trees on highway 13 around the village of Chon Than. We were security for the Rome Plows. After the Operation Paul Bunyan Two, our Battalion "The Black Scarf's" jumped off on Operation Shenandoah Two. If you want to know more about The Black Scarf Battalion you can Google it. If I can use some of your other photos I will ask for your permission! I will give you the credit. I hope to have my memoirs published some day. Once again, Welcome Home Brother. God Bless the USA and the Viet Nam Veteran.

Hi,

A friend shared the link to this site, and I wanted to share some info. Was an AF sgt. with the FAC team (Sidewinder) supporting 3rd Bde at Lai Khe, March-Oct '68. Was on radios in TOC when word came Danger 6 was down. We were calling in tac air to support MG Ware's people. Fro my understanding, one of the pilots of Ware's C&C was a boyfriend of Donut 6, Nancy. The reverberations of that C&C going down hurt many people.

In 2003, I discovered Keith Ware graduated from Denver's South HS, class of '33. I made contact with Keith's widow, and took my photos and other memorabilia to our 10-hr meeting. MG Ware sent her latters on tape. She started understanding what he was talking about from some of my photos. From his widow, I learned Keith was 12 when his father died; Keith's son was 12 when he died.

At South HS,I found there was no public recognition (plaque, etc.) of MG Keith Ware, MoH recipient from action in WW II, and KIA in Viet Nam. Living a few blocks away, I went to the SHS alum assoc., asking something be done to correct the lack of recognition. The JROTC instructor, LTC Paul Patrick weas given the assignment, and resisted doing anything for 10 years! Finally, in fall of 2012, I went to the alum assoc. again, and Paul got the assignment, again. He did not like that. He handled everything himself to eliminate any outside influence. In Jan 2013, Paul micro-managed the dedication of a bronze plaque of MG Ware. At the dedication, the director of Denver Public Schools, JROTC program, another LTC, asked me politely, "What did Keith do when he retired?" I thought he was joking. I told him, and he went white and dropped his jaw a couple inches. No South HS students or teachers knew about the dedication. Paul retired in June '13. The plaque is on the wall in a rather dark spot across from the admin office.

A couple years ago I stopped by Ft. Riley, and was escorted to the MG Keith Ware Elementary School, and the MG Ware Ceremonial Parade field, making photos of both locations.

It's a far cry from the honor and recognition of MG Ware at Ft. Riley, and the lack of interest at South High School.

You may have heard of the bungled overpriced VA hospital being built in Aurora, CO, east of Denver. I was thinking of submitting MG Keith Ware for the name of the hospital. Honest, I don't know if his name should be on such a boondoggle. Senator Cory Gardner and Representative Mike Coffman are the two to start the ball rolling, if anyone feels like making the push.

Thank you for the opportunity to view an outstanding perspective of Vietnam from the eyes of a combat medic, as you know the 2-2 Infantry had a very pivotal role in the Battle of Fallujah after leaving Grafenwoher, Germany. Dear Dave,

Can Anyone Help?

I served as a crew chief on C-123 K’s at NKP Thailand 70-71 (606th Special Operations Squadron – Candlesticks) . I took a snapshot (from about 8,000 ft.) during a day mission into South Vietnam of an insignia of the Big Red One which had been carved out of the Vietnamese jungle. I have been trying to learn the location of the photo from former pilots or anyone that may have served with the Army’s 1st Div. in Vietnam. I would be glad to email you a copy of the picture. I believe it would be of interest and should be in your archives.

Thanks for any help with this photo ID.

Dave, I have been working with Richard Cieszinski--traded comments with you earlier--to help locate the infantry unit his tank platoon was with on Feb 2, 1968. From the research I have done, it seems that unit may very well have been Alpha 2/2. I know Richard found a gentleman from Bravo Company 2/2, and it seems they were not the unit. I'm confident however that it may have been A company from 2/2 as we have found an important excerpt from the book, 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam (pg 159). The write up specifically mentions that a reaction platoon from 2/34 was sent to assist 2/2 in an ambush near Quon Loi and hwy 245. While reading and viewing photos from one of your Vietnam galleries, I found that Don Scott was with A 2/2 as a medic. I found an excerpt or photo with Mr. Scott from 8/1967, so not sure if he may have been with the same unit by Feb 1968. Either way, my search continues... Do you think Mr. Scott may have been with A company at that time? Any thoughts/suggestions on who we may be able to reach out to and confirm that it was A 2/2 there on Feb 2, 1968? Thank you for all your help and all the great photos, postings, work you have done.

I was south with 25th your images bring much back. Thank you, for all your effort, in the field and your site. Started as a leg,4/9,2/12,came back, Dumb! Dumb!, with Tet, I took a short and did serve from Mar. 1968 alive through Oct. 1970. Most fun was slip up on 2 old dudes in Ben Cat,a cool-aid stand bar w oil light. Put it all down then dropped the pot. I bought the beer, they spoke a some american, I knew "STOP,COME HERE,ID". Walked back to my perimeter. Might have felt bad, sipping beer w/old VC, but I trained them. My voice got me back. My guy's were the best, as were those we all served with, and lost. I wish the the fate of a man, last dust-off, maybe 1/27, 2/27. We reacted a ambush 2/34th was security,we reacted. He seemed almost cut-in two. My gilt. Drips of water Secure the LZ roll him on a stretcher and sniff his liver.

I like you spent March 67 through sometime in October in 2/2nd Mechanized unit B company and was first the M60 gunner then later the 50 gunner on track 214. I sent you several names I remember and am trying and researching for more and will provide them. I was assigned to the 2/28th Black Lions C company and thought I would finish out my tour there, but for some reason was pulled and assigned to Long Binh as an M60 gunner around the ammo depot. Unfortunately, I was assigned to tower 28 which is the tower that was attached on Tet 68 and overrun. There were 5 of us there and 3 were KIA, somehow I survived.
thank you for your research and getting this gone. I have not communicated with anyone about anything in so long it feels good to share and read some of the others stories.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your pictures. I am also a Viet Nam vet '69-'70. I have a bunch (1500) and enjoy looking at them. Very beautiful with vast rice paddies in the valleys and Jungle passes.

Dave: I think I may have a clue as to Tom Prato's inquire about the 34th Armor tank that helped him out. I have a strong feeling that it was Lt Tomas Przybelski's tank of Company A , 2nd Bn, 34th Armor. The tank pictured is not Lt Przybelski's tank for his was a command tank with two radio towers and the one pictured has one as a standard line tank) It is positivly an "A" company tank (with an external 50cal machine gun) Stock M-48A3 (as used in VN) had the 50 cals mounted in the TC cupala's. This stock mounting proved unworkable because the gun was laying on it's left side and the extractor would be pulled down and jam as the bolt was moving backward. The A company commander ordered that all 50 cals would be mounted externally like the pic shows.
Lt Tomas Przybelski is a local Green Bay, Wi guy and I would like to know more about how he was killed. His obit says he died in Siagon Hosp. He was awarded a Silver Start medal posthumusly. Mr. Prato's accout of this action is the only eyewitness account I have ever found

I was standing by Capt. Kizer when he was killed( a devote christian and soldier and a great friend!! Remember his cane? Just ordered Gen. Dave,
I was a medic w/ 3/39th 9th div in 67-68. At the time I didn't think I would ever want to recall my VN experience, so I have very few reminders. I've recently discovered a need to revisit and get in touch with this part of my life. Your photos are helping tremendously. Thanks for keeping this history alive. It means a lot to me and I'm sure also for others who were there. Joe

Charles,
It's so good to have contact again, since we lost it and I wasn't sure how to contact you. I can't thank you enough for the photos that you shared with me. They have had great meaning to a lot of people. Especially the photo of Cpt. Kizer. As you saw, there have been a lot of comments from friends and family members. I will contact you by email, but just wanted to leave a quick comment here, in case you check this site before you get the email.

Oh, I have a color pic of the "Mad Minute" that caught 5 NVA and VC in the wire. Then the battle began. No More pics. Just CYA!!!! To this day I cannot believe the VC/NVA would attempt a frontal assault against, not just us, but any fixed position with our fire-power. Do you remember a LT by the name of Hazelwood and anther medic named Carl Harris?. harris also served with the 1st Car in '65 and was at I Drang (Once We Were Soldiers Film Fame"

FInally, retired and moved back to Las Vegas. Did a lot of Rock Concerts here. I am moving to the US Virgin Island in June of 2012. Dave, I was Jeff Hahn's squad leader. I recommended him to be my replacment and was in the rear getting ready to rotate when he was killed. I went to grave registration to identify him. Do you have any other contacts of that squad and did you take that picture of him?

Hi Berry, greetings to you and your family. It has been many years and have relive my memory through your photos. One question, do you have more photos of Recon 67-68?
Fay Stout03-Jun-2009 02:31
Hi Dave... I have very much enjoyed looking at your photos from your years of service as well as those about your nursing career. If you have time, I would love to have you visit my gallery on nursing. I cannot imagine all the stories you have to tell about your career and I'm so glad you returned home safely. I lost several friends in Vietnam and have cared for many with debilitating health and mental disorders as a result of their time there.

Thanks and keep up the good work !

As a Special Forces soldier I served in Loc Ninh from 1966 until after the attack during which I was wounded. I have pictures stored away in a footlocker someplace, I'll dig them out and see if I can get them on-line.

Interesting picture of the band. I was in the Loc Ninh town square when the bank played, there were no civilians around, they were either gone or hiding. The Battalion commander told me the battle was over and the NVA would not be back. I told him the fight was just starting. That night, it really hit the fan. One of my friends was wounded three times that night.

Hi Dave...
Thanks so much for visiting my galleries and commenting.
I am very appreciative. I just finished touring your Alexandria and WilliamsburgVA
galleries and it brought me back to the time we visited there. Love those old towns.
Here in New England we have many of them, too. Many thanks for your time spent in
Vietnam...we all are appreciative.
Thanks for sharing....Linda Marlowe

Doc Berry
I posted this on one of the pics and decided to put here also.
Thanks for putting all these photo's together, great job. Would you know which unit these pics of Xom Bo are 1/16 or 2/28. I was Dauntless Bravo 3-6 Kilo on the first day (17 Jun 67) and then Bravo 6 Kilo the second day after the fight when Capt. Turner lost his RTO. Third platoon was point going into clearing, on the west side and took most of the causalities of Bravo Co. These are very moving pictures, some of the faces look a little familiar, but I can't be sure.

Were you attached to 3rd Platoon, Bravo 2nd/28th anytime during Jan 67 to Jan 68? I think our medic on Xam Bo was named Valeho (spelling ???)

Wonderful collection of Vietnam war-era photos. Thank you for posting them, and for the comment on my site. My brother was a medic with the 1st Cav., about the same time you were in country.
I'm writting this from a hotel in Bangkok (with my laptop and great wifi connection). I catch a plane for Laos in a few hours, then on to Vietnam. It will be my seventh trip back to Vietnam since the war.

Hi there....
I have been viewing your excellent work and have to say, you certainly have talent
and capture your subjects nicely. I especially enjoyed your New England album being
from Massachusetts. Thank you for commenting and visiting. Keep shooting...
